Earlier this year, Gwynne Dyer, author, speaker, military historian & independent journalist wrote about the Roman Catholic Church. In his piece, titled in the Japan Times as “Catholic Church is losing battle with modernity”, February 19, he stated of this religious entity: ” Its rigid hierarchy and its centralizing instincts are almost entirely due to the fact that it became the state religion of the Roman Empire over 1,600 hundred years ago. ”
And the pope is still, in essence, the emperor. How Roman are the traditions and instincts of the church that Pope Benedict XVI has led for the past seven years? Well, one of his titles is “Pontifex Maximus,” usually translated from the Latin as “Supreme Pontiff.” That was the title of the high priest of the old Roman (pagan) state religion under the Republic.
Very, very interesting. The Bible makes it crystal clear that belief in Jesus Christ would never become the state religion of any empire. James 4:4 reads: “Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.”
When Jesus was brought before Herod prior to his crucifixion, Luke 23: 8, 9 records that… ” when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad: for he was desirous to see him of a long season, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to have seen some miracle done by him. Then he questioned with him in many words; but he answered him nothing.”
There was no nice melding of the religious and political worlds, and power here, Jesus Christ had absolutely nothing to say to this ruler and refused to speak to him. Herod was one of the rulers of a great kingdom of this earth and in answer to Pilate in John 18:36, “Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.” Of his disciples, Jesus said in John 17:14, “I have given them thy word: and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.
Dyer also stated:
Benedict XVI was the emperor of a shrinking domain, for the Catholic Church has been shedding adherents not only in the West, where it is everywhere in steep decline, but also in the Latin American, African and Asian countries where it once held unchallenged sway. While secularism is the enemy that steals the faithful in the West, evangelical forms of Christianity are seducing Catholic believers away in what we used to call the Third World.
This is good news for freedom around the world. What Dyer declares agrees with what I stated regarding Latin American Catholicism in Who Killed Abraham Lincoln?: “the number of Protestants in Latin America has increased dramatically since the 1930’s in what has been called a Latin American Reformation. A 1996 Newsweek magazine article reported that in that year, an average of 8,000 baptized Catholics a day were becoming Protestants.”
Samuel Morse, inventor of the electric telegraph and the code that bears his name certainly spoke out about the ambitions and the intolerance of Romanism. In his 1835 book, Foreign Conspiracy Against The Liberties Of The United States: The number of Brutus, Morse stated of American liberty: “In thus tolerating all sects, we have admitted to equal protection not only those sects whose religious faith and practice support the principle on which the free toleration of all is founded, but also that unique, that solitary sect, the Catholic, which builds and supports its system on the destruction of all toleration. Yes, the Catholic is permitted to work in the light of Protestant toleration, to mature his plans, and to execute his designs to extinguish that light, and destroy the hands that hold it.”
Yes Mr. Dyer brings good news but the Church of Rome does not give up power and influence easily, it appears.
